Choosing too little data can leave you stuck, and choosing too much can waste money. Use your own habits to estimate what you need.
Think about what you will do
- Light use: maps, messaging and occasional web pages
- Medium use: the above plus ride apps, photo sharing and some music
- Heavy use: video calls, streaming, hotspot use for a laptop or other devices
How to estimate
- Check your phone's settings for your typical monthly data use at home
- Divide by the number of days to get a rough daily figure, then multiply by your trip length
- Add a buffer for days when you use more, such as travel days
Ways to save data
- Download offline maps and playlists on Wi-Fi before you go
- Turn off automatic video play and background app refresh
- Use hotel Wi-Fi for large uploads and downloads
