There are three common ways to get mobile data when you travel. Each has trade-offs, so compare them against your phone, your plan and your trip.
Travel eSIM
- Pros: set up before you leave, no store visit, can keep your home SIM active
- Cons: needs an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone; plans are often data only
Local physical SIM
- Pros: may include calls and a local number
- Cons: you need to buy it after you arrive, may need ID, and you swap your SIM card
Roaming with your home plan
- Pros: the easiest to set up, since nothing changes
- Cons: prices and limits vary a lot by carrier, so check your plan before you rely on it
How to choose
- Check whether your phone supports eSIM
- Estimate how much data you will use for maps, messaging and photos
- Compare the total cost for your trip length, not just the daily price
- Ask your home carrier what international options they offer
