If you are visiting the United States and want mobile data without roaming surprises, a travel eSIM can be a convenient option. Use this checklist.
Before you buy
- Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier unlocked
- Check that the plan covers the United States and the areas you plan to visit, such as cities, national parks and Hawaii
- Estimate your data needs for maps, ride apps, messaging and photos
- Check the plan length and when the countdown begins
- Check whether the plan includes calls, texts or only data
Before you fly
- Install the eSIM profile while you still have a Wi-Fi connection, if the provider allows it
- Save the setup instructions and QR code where you can find them offline
- Know how to turn the eSIM on and off in your phone settings
After you land
- Turn on data for the eSIM line and turn off data roaming on your home SIM if you want to avoid roaming charges
- Test a map or message app before you leave the airport
- If something does not work, check the provider's help page or support channel
Coverage tip
Mobile coverage can be weaker in remote areas, including some national parks and deserts. Download offline maps before you go.
